Frequently Asked Questions and Answers
„Trauma is perhaps the most avoided, ignored, belittled, denied, misunderstood, and untreated cause of human suffering.” - Dr. Peter A. Levine
Trauma is not what happened to you. Trauma is the psychological scar left in your nervous system after an overwhelming event. Trauma is what keeps people stuck in an unresolved survival situation. This can lead to physical and psychological symptoms such as anxiety, sleep disorders, concentration problems, and much more.
An overwhelming event can be a single, intense experience (accident, attack, abuse, etc.) or a serious situation that persists over a longer period of time (oppression, bullying, neglect, etc.).
Each session follows the individual and what arises in the moment. Together, we focus our attention on bodily sensations, inner images, feelings, meaningful words, and movements. Through gentle, curious observation and slowing down, the nervous system can reorganize itself. The body shows what it needs — step by step, at its own pace. Together, we observe these movements.
Most sessions begin with us sitting or standing and talking to each other. If appropriate, movements or touch may take place. During bodywork while lying down, clothes always remain on and only those parts of the body are touched where both therapist and client feel comfortable.
It's impossible to predict. Sometimes the problem resolves itself in just one or two sessions, sometimes it takes several. Every session is unique. Just like you.
SE is not confrontation therapy.
In an SE session, you learn to remain anchored in the present while talking about past experiences. It is not about the details of difficult events, but about what is currently felt in the body. By oscillating between these resources and the overwhelming experience, the survival energy bound in the nervous system is gradually released. The traumatic experience is not to be relived.
The body has the ability to regulate itself and initiate healing. This requires mindful awareness of the present moment. In this way, step by step, more security, calmness, and vitality can return.
In acute panic situations or states of anxiety, adults can call the "Dargebotene Hand (143)" and young people can call 147. These services are free and anonymous.
A panic attack is a sudden and strong reaction of the nervous system, which is no longer able to assess a situation as safe. The system switches to survival mode, even though this is not objectively necessary.
SE can help to understand and regulate panic attacks. Instead of fighting the symptoms, the nervous system is invited to safely release its protective reactions. Over time, the body learns to recognize and calm states of alarm. This creates an increased sense of security in one's own experience and confidence in one's own inner stability.
Touch is not a must. The work is mainly done through inward observation and conversation. In some phases, mindful touch can be helpful — for example, to stabilize the nervous system or to make connection tangible. This is only done with consent and mutual agreement.
